HC Deb 21 June 1917 vol 94 cc1952-3
39. Mr. DUNCAN MILLAR

asked the Minister of Munitions whether the Central Control Board (Liquor Traffic) have pre- pared a draft Regulation prohibiting the sale of spirits on Saturdays throughout Scotland; whether the issue of the Regulation has been opposed by the liquor trade in Scotland; and whether it is now proposed to abandon the proposal owing to the opposition of the trade?

Mr. KELLAWAY

The question has been under consideration, but no immediate action is contemplated.

Mr. MILLAR

May I ask whether any representations have been received against this proposal from any other quarters than from the liquor trade?

Mr. KELLAWAY

I could not say that without notice. The fact that representations against the proposal have been made by the liquor trade is no ground for supposing that is the reason for not going on with the Order.

Mr. MILLAR

Then may I take it the Order will be proceeded with if no objections are taken to it?

Mr. KELLAWAY

My answer was that no immediate action is contemplated, and I hope my hon. Friend will not confuse post hoc with propter hoc.

Mr. FLAVIN

May I ask whether the working man in this country is not entitled to his glass of beer as the swell is entitled to his cigar?

Mr. SPEAKER

The hon. Member has not a monopoly of information.
