HC Deb 21 June 1917 vol 94 cc1950-1
93. Mr. J. M. HENDERSON

asked the Under-Secretary of State for War why the proposed new system of recruiting by which all men were to be debadged from the 7th May last, and from that date protection cards were to be issued, coloured red for scheduled occupations and buff for munition workers, has not been carried out as proposed; and whether he is aware that last week buff cards were issued indiscriminately and no red cards, and that men of military age received these buff protecting cards who were not munition workers and for whom no exemption was claimed?

Mr. MACPHERSON

Copies of the Instructions dealing with this matter are in the Library of the House. As my hon. Friend will gather from them the recipients of the cards are not chosen by the military authorities.

Mr. HENDERSON

Is it not a fact that a number of men who are of military age and are not engaged in munition works have received exemption cards?

Mr. MACPHERSON

I must have notice of that. If the hon. Gentleman will give me some cases, I will look into them.
