HC Deb 21 June 1917 vol 94 c1951
100 and 101. Mr. SNOWDEN

asked the Under-Secretary of State for War if he will have some inquiry made into the number of complaints from the Malleny Camp, Currie, Edinburgh, as to the treatment to which they are subjected by the non-commissioned officers, and particularly into the case of Private No. 13547, 3rd Highland Light Infantry, who has served two years and nine months, has been wounded, and who has been prodded with the bayonet nine times by a colour-sergeant of the company, and also in the case of Private No. 24978, whose age is only eighteen years and seven months, with one year and five months' service, who has been wounded and who was recently tied to a pump handle and swung round with it; (2) if he will have an examination made of Private Booth, who has just been called to the Colours and sent to Winchester to the 18th London Reserve Regiment, seeing that this man has been an inmate of a criminal lunatic asylum, has since been discharged from civil employment on account of his mental condition, and that he is not considered responsible for his actions?

Mr. MACPHERSON

I have called for a report on the matters raised in these questions. I will communicate the result to my hon. Friend as soon as possible.
