HC Deb 18 June 1917 vol 94 cc1409-10
34. Mr. E. HARVEY

asked the Home Secretary how many citizens were detained for a period exceeding five hours by the police and how many were kept until after daybreak on the following day on the occasion of the police raid in Whitechapel on 18th May, 1917; and whether he will give instructions that apologies shall be made to those men who were thus detained without any just cause?

Sir G. CAVE

Fifteen persons were detained for more than four hours. These fifteen were detained until their friends brought their papers to the station; and their detention averaged about five hours. None were kept after daybreak except those charged. The answer to the last question is in the negative.

Mr. KING

Were none of these aliens found to be absentees?

Sir G. CAVE

I forget the number, I think about five.
