HC Deb 14 June 1917 vol 94 c1105
34. Mr. D. MILLAR

asked the Minister of Munitions whether any molasses or spirits are still being imported into this country in order to provide alcohol for the manufacture of munitions and for commercial purposes; and, if so, whether he can state the quantity of molasses and spirits so imported and the number of ships required to carry the cargoes?

The PARLIAMENTARY. SECRETARY to the MINISTRY of MUNITIONS (Sir Worthington Evans)

Molasses are being imported into this country for the manufacture of alcohol for munitions and for commercial purposes, while a small quantity of spirit is also being imported from one of the Colonies for munition purposes. It would not be to the public interest to state the quantity of molasses and spirit imported and the number of ships required to carry the cargo.

Mr. MILLAR

Are these molasses and spirits being imported in ships provided with the consent of the Shipping Controller?

Sir W. EVANS

Certainly. I believe so.
