HC Deb 14 June 1917 vol 94 c1101
7. Major NEWMAN

asked the Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs will he ascertain if a cablegram or letter was recently sent or endeavoured to be sent to MM. Kerensky and Cheidze, members of the Russian Provisional Government, by members of the society who are opposing the Military Service (Convention with Allied States) Bill, misrepresenting the intentions of the Government of this country; and has the Foreign Office or other Government Department received any communication from the Russian Government in answer?

Lord R. CECIL

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative, and to the second in the negative.

Major NEWMAN

With regard to the letter or cablegram which was sent or endeavoured to be sent, did it reach Russia?

Lord R. CECIL

I am not quite sure whether it did or not. I am afraid that I cannot give the hon. Member any clearer or more definite answer.

Major NEWMAN

The answer being in the affirmative, what does it mean?

Lord R. CECIL

It means that a cablegram or letter was recently sent or endeavoured to be sent to MM. Kerensky and Cheidze.
