HC Deb 14 June 1917 vol 94 cc1113-4
58. Mr. BILLING

asked the Prime Minister whether he is aware that Burma beans which were taken over by the Ministry of Food at £37 per ton are being resold by them at £58 and £59 per ton, and what is being done with the profits thus accruing; and whether he proposes to take any action in the matter?

Mr. BRIDGEMAN

I have been asked to reply. I have nothing to add to the answer given last Monday to the hon. Member for Dartford, except to repeat that it is improbable that the Government will realise any profit on the whole series of transactions in beans.

Mr. BILLING

Is it not a fact that these prices have been put up by the Government in the interests of vested interests?

Mr. BRIDGEMAN

I am only answering on behalf of the Parliamentary Secretary of Food Control, and I cannot answer supplementary questions.

Mr. BILLING

May I urge the Leader of the House to appoint a Food Controller as soon as possible, so that he may answer questions?
