HC Deb 12 June 1917 vol 94 cc750-1
38. Mr. W.THORNE

asked the Minister of Munitions whether, in the event of a munition worker being injured to the extent of having a limb or limbs amputated, artificial substitutes are provided free of charge by the Government; and, if not, will the Government give the matter early consideration, with a view to taking action?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the MINISTRY of MUNITIONS (Mr. Kellaway)

There is no obligation, under the Workmen's Compensation Act, on the employer to provide artificial substitutes. In the case of workers in the direct employ of the Ministry, if an employé has lost a limb as the result of an accident arising out of and in the course of his employment, the Ministry has, when application has been made, provided an artificial substitute free of charge.
