HC Deb 07 June 1917 vol 94 cc325-6
52. Major HUNT

asked the Prime Minister whether, in view of the fact that our sailors and soldiers have been told that they are fighting for the very existence of the Empire, and that resolutions have been passed in various parts of the Empire that the Governments of the Empire should accept the sole responsibility of the settlement and future welfare of the Empire's sailors and soldiers, together with their near depend ants, he will inform the House whether the British Government is prepared to accept this responsibility?

Sir G. CAVE

I cannot say more at present than that the Government is giving the most careful consideration to this subject, of the importance of which they are fully aware.

Major HUNT

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the Dominions are already waiting for a lead from this country, and that the Prime Minister said that the matter was urgent; and can the right hon. Gentleman say when the Committee is likely to report?

Sir G. CAVE

I know that the matter is urgent, but I cannot fix a date.

Major HUNT

Does the right hon. Gentleman take the responsibility of not answering that question?
