HC Deb 07 June 1917 vol 94 c325
51. Major HUNT

asked the Prime Minister whether, in view of the fact that the War Agricultural Committee passed a resolution protesting against the total prohibition of racing, he can say what steps the Government intend to take for providing entire horses suitable for breeding horses for the Army and national purposes?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the BOARD of AGRICULTURE (Sir Richard Winfrey)

The temporary suspension of racing is not likely to affect seriously the provision of thoroughbred stallions suitable for mating with half-bred mares. If, however, racing is prohibited for any length of time the steps necessary to provide the stallions will require further consideration.

Mr. BUTCHER

How is it possible to select good sires for breeding purposes unless they are tested by racing?

Sir R. WINFREY

The suspension is only temporary.

Sir HENRY DALZIEL

Can the hon. Gentleman say why racing is allowed in Ireland and not in England?
