§ 2. Mr. PEMBERTON BILLINGasked the Postmaster-General if he is aware that temporary male sorters, porters, and postmen are only receiving half the 1474 amount of extra war bonus recently announced; and, if so, what action he proposes to take?
§ The ASSISTANT POSTMASTER-GENERAL (Mr. Pike Pease)The additional war bonus received by the temporary staff of the Post Office is in accordance with an award by the Conciliation and Arbitration Board for Government Employés. It is provided in the award that increases granted since 1st July, 1916 (other than normal increases granted during or at the conclusion of the preliminary period of training), shall be deducted from the amount of the bonus.
§ Mr. BILLINGIs the hon. Gentleman aware that these particular employés regard this as unfair and unjust, and is he prepared to go to the extent of a strike in holding the view he does?
§ Mr. PEASEAs far as this question is concerned, it is really out of our hands entirely; this is decided by the Conciliation and Arbitration Board, over which we have no power at all.
