HC Deb 06 July 1917 vol 95 cc1480-1
23. Mr. HOGGE

asked whether there are any soldiers who took part in the Mesopotamia campaign at present in Winchester Gaol; if so, for what offence; whether some of them are still suffering from the hardships they experienced; and whether there is one young lad of nineteen undergoing a term of ten years' penal servitude for the alleged offence of being asleep on sentry duty?

Mr. MACPHERSON

I have no information on this matter, and in the absence of details am unable to reply. Perhaps my hon. Friend would furnish me with any particulars he has in his possession?

Mr. HOGGE

When the question is put down, does not the hon. Gentleman at once make inquiries, and is not that the object why he represents the War Office?

Mr. MACPHERSON

Yes, but if my hon. Friend does not give me particulars I would have to inquire and find out the history of every prisoner, and it would be better if he would give any specific name.
