HC Deb 06 July 1917 vol 95 cc1478-9
19. Mr. COOTE

asked the Under-Secretary of State for War why Private E. H. Moore, No. 21742, No. 1 Company, 3rd Battalion, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, who enlisted at Omagh, Ireland, for motor transport, has not been permitted to serve as such, although being a trained motor driver before enlistment he was definitely promised employment and pay in this service; whether he is aware that this soldier has been denied the pay of the motor transport, and that he has been sent to in Infantry battalion which is not of his choosing, and that if he must serve in. the Infantry he desires to be sent to the Reserve Battalion of the 9th Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers (Ulster Division); and will he take steps to make tie necessary transfer?

20. Mr. COOTE

asked the Undersecretary of State for War why Private H. P. Elkin, No. 72099, A Company, 111th Training Reserve, Wimbledon Common, who enlisted voluntarily at Omagh, Ireland, for motor transport, has not been permitted to serve as such, and, failing this, and on his being sent into an Infantry battalion, why his desire to serve in his own Territorial battalion, the 9th Battalion of the Royal Inniskillings, Ulster Division, has not been acceded to; and if he will take the necessary steps to carry out the transfer of this soldier?

Mr. MACPHERSON

In each case it is necessary to make inquiries, and I will communicate again with my hon. Friend as soon as possible.

Mr. COOTE

Will the right hon. Gentleman see that these men are not sent to the front until the matter is inquired into?

Mr. MACPHERSON

I cannot say that yet.

22. Mr. NEEDHAM

asked the Undersecretary of State for War whether he has received a report on the case of James Brightmore; and whether he can make a statement thereon?

Mr. MACPHERSON

I have nothing to add at present to the answer given yesterday to my hon. Friend the Member for Mid-Lanark.

Mr. C. ROBERTS

Will the report be communicated to the House in some way?

Mr. MACPHERSON

I hope so. I usually ask the hon. Member to put down a question.
