HC Deb 12 February 1917 vol 90 c266
44. Major HUNT

asked the Home Secretary whether his attention has been called to the statement at the Cinema Commission that there were 40,000 prostitutes of alien birth in the county of London; and whether he proposes to take any steps to have all of these women of enemy birth deported to their own countries?

Sir G. CAVE

My attention has been drawn to the statement, but I have no reason to think that it is accurate, or makes any approach to accuracy. Prostitutes of alien enemy birth, if they retained their enemy nationality, would certainly be deported, and I believe that all German women known to be prostitutes have been deported already. There is no power to deport women of enemy birth who may have become British subjects by marriage.

Major HUNT

Are they not very likely to be spies if they are left in this country?
