HC Deb 12 February 1917 vol 90 c265
42. Mr. PARTINGTON

asked the Home Secretary whether his attention has been drawn to the increase in accidents due to the darkened streets; and whether he will consider the advisability of altering the regulations so that the streets may remain lighted up to 8 p.m.?

Sir G. CAVE

The question of lighting has been carefully considered in consultation with the military authorities, and on the 25th January last I made an Order under which the general lighting restrictions will not take effect until 7.30 p.m. in March and 8.30 p.m. in April. An alteration has also been made in the method by which the public lamps in London are obscured, which will (it is believed) improve the diffusion of light from these lamps without increasing the danger of attack from the air.
