HC Deb 26 April 1917 vol 92 cc2588-9
13. Mr. CLANCY

asked the Chief Secretary whether the employés of the Board of Works in Kingstown, county of Dublin, the Ministry of Munitions in Dublin, the national school teachers in Ireland, the postal officials in Ireland, and the employés of the War Office in Ireland work under the same conditions as the corresponding classes of employés in England; and, if so, whether they will, respectively, be granted rates of remuneration equal to those paid to their brethren in England, in accordance with the official statement that, when the conditions were uniform, the remuneration would be uniform?

Mr. DUKE

No, Sir; I am not prepared to admit that the conditions are uniform in the various cases mentioned. I must point out to my hon. and learned Friend that I have no responsibility for the wages paid by the War Office, the Ministry of Munitions, the Post Office and the Board of Works, and any question regarding these cases should be addressed to the Ministers responsible for those Departments respectively.

Mr. CLANCY

Does the right hon. Gentleman mean that what I have said is untrue?

Mr. DUKE

I should not say anything of the kind. I am told the conditions in these cases are not uniform, but it may be that there is a difference of opinion between those who give me the information and the hon. and learned Gentleman.

Mr. CLANCY

Is the right hon. Gentleman prepared to say in what respect they are not uniform?

Mr. DUKE

Not without notice.
