HC Deb 25 April 1917 vol 92 c2400
81. Mr. MILLAR

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of National Service whether, under the amended scheme of National Service, it is proposed to make any further appeals to miners and munition workers, who are already fully occupied on work of vital national importance, to enrol as volunteers, or whether the services of such workers will only be invited in connection with specific work which they will be asked to undertake immediately on being enrolled?

Mr. WALSH

Perhaps I may refer my hon. Friend to the answer which I gave him on this subject on Monday last. It is impossible to say what appeals may be necessary in the future, but it is not proposed at present to make any fresh appeal of a general character, although it remains open to miners and munition workers, as to other classes of the community, to enrol as National Service Volunteers, and it is hoped that they will continue to do so.
