HC Deb 24 April 1917 vol 92 cc2230-1
67. Mr. CATHCART WASON

asked the Secretary to the Admiralty if the Admiralty have commandeered the "St. Ola," the mail boat between Orkney and the mainland; and, if so, if he will state if the Admiralty propose seriously to leave a very important agricultural county destitute of mail service?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the MINISTRY of SHIPPING CONTROL (Sir Leo Chiozza Money)

My right hon. Friend has asked me to answer this question. The vessel in question has not been requisitioned. Inquiries have been made respecting her, and we are in communication with the General Post Office on the subject, which is still under consideration.

68. Mr. C. WASON

asked the Post master-General if he has been served with notice that the Admiralty propose to commandeer the "St. Ola," the mail steamer between Orkney and the mainland; and, in the event of the threat being carried out, what he proposes to do so that the entire county will not be deprived of the very limited mail now carried?

The POSTMASTER-GENERAL (Mr. Illingworth)

I am in communication with the Ministry of Shipping on this subject and will inform the hon. Member what arrangements will be made.
