HC Deb 24 April 1917 vol 92 c2220
37. Sir GEORGE TOULMIN

asked the Minister of Munitions whether lead from the Greenside mine, Glenridding-on-Ulls-water, is taken by or on behalf of the Ministry; if so, will he state what is the ratio of the price paid to the price before the War; what are the rates of wages paid now and before the War, and the average earned by individuals for contract work; whether any men receive less in any week than the National Service minimum; whether soldiers have been applied for and supplied to work at this mine; whether any have been removed, and, if so, was it at their own request and for what cause; and whether any, and, if so, what, welfare conditions are imposed by the Ministry at this mine?

Mr. KELLAWAY

No load is taken from this mine by, or directly on behalf of, the Ministry of Munitions. It is impossible to say whether any contractor who may ultimately receive this lead is engaged on contracts for the Ministry, but the Ministry has no arrangement with any contractor for the extraction of lead from this mine.
