HC Deb 18 October 1916 vol 86 c524
6. Sir EDWIN CORNWALL

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he will make a statement with regard to recent events in Abyssinia and as to the present position in North-East Africa?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Lord Robert Cecil)

We have received telegrams from His Majesty's Minister at Adis Ababa reporting that a revolution directed against the Prince of Abyssinia took place in the last week of September. A public proclamation was issued by the revolutionary party at Adis Ababa, deposing Lij Yasu on the ground that he had pursued an anti-Christian policy of Government, and nominating a daughter of the late Emperor Menelik Empress of Abyssinia. No definite news of a further development of the situation has yet been received.
