HC Deb 17 October 1916 vol 86 cc359-60
104. Sir H. CRAIK

asked the Secretary for Scotland whether he is aware that the School Board of Auchinleck, disregarding the recommendation of the Scottish Education Department and the example of the school boards throughout the country, has resolved that no remuneration be given to any teacher on military service; and whether the Department can take any action to prevent a course which imposes a heavy penalty upon those who have responded to the call of the country, and which inflicts a stigma upon the constituency represented by the board?

The SECRETARY for SCOTLAND (Mr. Tennant)

No representation with regard to this matter has been made to me, but, in view of the hon. Member's statement, I am communicating with the school board, and I hope they will see their way to comply with the recommendation of the Scottish Education Department with regard to the payment of allowances to teachers on military service.
