HC Deb 21 November 1916 vol 87 c1193
98. Mr. MALCOLM

asked the Home Secretary whether the States of Jersey have not accepted the amendments recommended by the Privy Council in the Military Service Act as proposed to be applied to the island of Jersey?

The SECRETARY of STATE for the HOME DEPARTMENT (Mr. Herbert Samuel)

This matter is still before the States of Jersey and the Privy Council is in communication with the States with regard to it.

99. Mr. MALCOLM

asked the Home Secretary whether two appointments have been made by the Royal Court of the Island in Guernsey of young men of military age in connection with the execution of a Compulsory Military Service Bill recently voted, although these duties could be competently performed by men over military age or by women; and, if so, what action he proposes to take?

Mr. SAMUEL

Two men, aged respectively twenty-eight and thirty-five, have been appointed to the posts mentioned. One of them is a cripple from birth and unfit for any form of military service; the case of the other is now before the Guernsey Tribunal, and the question whether he retains the appointment or not must, of course, depend on the decision of the tribunal. The matter is not one in which I have any power to interfere.
