HC Deb 16 November 1916 vol 87 cc943-4
10. Mr. LYNCH

asked whether any definition is available of the limits of interference of the representatives of the Allies in the affairs of Greece on the mainland; whether their authority is exercised in preventing Greek soldiers from going over to the Germans; and whether, in view of the confusion arising from what is practically a dual regime in Greece, he will now advise the recognition of the Venizelos Government?

Lord R. CECIL

The answer to the first part of the question is in the negative. All proper steps will be taken to safeguard the military position of the Allied forces. I can add nothing to what has already been said on the last part of the question.

Mr. LYNCH

May I ask if the de jure ruler of Greece takes steps against the Allies, will no proper protection be given to the de facto ruler?

Lord R. CECIL

I have already said that all proper steps will be taken to safeguard the military position of the Allied forces.
