HC Deb 15 November 1916 vol 87 cc795-6
95. Mr. BYRNE

asked the President of the Board of Trade, if he is aware of the discontent on the Irish railways caused by the insufficient wages paid to the employés; and if he will say whether the Government have devised or are considering any scheme by way of grant, or otherwise, that would enable the railway companies to pay a reasonable war bonus to their employés?

Mr. PRETYMAN

The question of any increase in the war bonus to the men employed on the Irish railways is a matter for the railway companies, and not for the Board of Trade.

Mr. BYRNE

That is not the question I have asked. Will the hon. Gentleman kindly answer whether the Government propose to give a grant to the Irish railways to enable them to pay a war bonus to their employés similar to what is done in England?

Mr. PRETYMAN

I will consider that matter.

Mr. BYRNE

I will repeat my question, as it has not been answered.
