HC Deb 15 November 1916 vol 87 c804
119. Mr. ANDERSON

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is now in a position to make any statement regarding the proposed fixing of a minimum wage for all low-paid workers?

Mr. PRETYMAN

The Board of Trade-are considering the whole question of the desirability and practicability of extending after the War the operation of legal minimum rates of wages for women and the best machinery for securing any such extension, but I am not in a position to make any statement on the subject at present. I may take this opportunity of correcting a misunderstanding, to which unofficial Press reports of a recent deputation appear to have given rise, by saying that I stated that this question, which obviously presents many difficulties, is being examined.

Mr. SNOWDEN

Is the question being restricted to consideration of the application of a minimum wage to women only, and not to low-paid workers generally?

Mr. PRETYMAN

I must ask for notice-of that.

Mr. SNOWDEN

You said so in your reply.
