HC Deb 15 November 1916 vol 87 cc804-5
120. Mr. JOWETT

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that in some cases retailers of coal to householders in Bradford are charging 5s. per ton more for coal than they charged to their customers eighteen months ago, and, in addition, have reduced their rate of discount and are charging extra for delivery in bags; and whether he will make a statement for the guidance of householders to enable them to obtain the protection which the Coal Prices (Limitation) Act was intended to give?

Mr. PRETYMAN

I am making inquiries as to the price of coal in Bradford, and will communicate with my hon. Friend. The Price of Coal (Limitation) Act does not apply to retail charges, but the local authorities in a number of towns have made arrangements with the merchants for a limitation of profits.
