HC Deb 15 November 1916 vol 87 cc755-6
9. Mr. MIDDLEMORE

asked what was the total number of chief warrant officers, warrant officers, petty officers, and men mentioned in dispatches and reports for their services in the battle of Jutland Bank; and what is the number of consequent promotions to commissioned officer rank?

Dr. MACNAMARA

The answer to the first part of the question is as follows:

Commissioned warrant officers 20
Warrant officers 35
(including two warrant officers of the Royal Marines and two of the Royal Naval Reserve).
Petty officers and men 482
As regards the second part of the question, the total number promoted to commissioned rank is six, and in ten other cases commissioned warrant officers have been noted for early promotion to commissioned rank.

My hon. Friend will be interested to know that, apart from the six promotions to commissioned rank, the following awards, amongst others, have also been made:

Commissioned warrant officers 1 D.S.C.
Warrant officers 1 D.S.C.
Petty officers and men 1 V.C.
13 C.G.M.
176 D.S.M.
1 D.S.M. (bar).
