HC Deb 15 November 1916 vol 87 c782
60. Mr. ANDERSON

asked the Financial Secretary to the War Office whether he can state on what principle deductions are made from the pay of soldiers for alleged barracks damage; whether all soldiers are liable to have deductions made, though having no personal responsibility for the damage done; and whether it is proposed to take any action in the matter?

Mr. FORSTER

In all cases where a barracks damage can be brought home to any individual person, it would be paid by that person, but in cases where that is not possible, a general charge would be made.

Mr. ANDERSON

Is it not very unfair that soldiers should be charged for something for which one soldier is liable?

Mr. FORSTER

Where it can be brought home to an individual it is charged to the individual, but where it is not it is charged generally.
