HC Deb 15 November 1916 vol 87 cc786-7
78. Major HUNT

asked the Prime Minister, if he will explain why the Union of Democratic Control and other anti-patriotic or pro-German societies are allowed to go about holding meetings against the vigorous prosecution of the War?

The SECRETARY Of STATE for the HOME DEPARTMENT (Mr. Herbert Samuel)

The Prime Minister has asked me to reply to this question. I would refer the hon. and gallant Member to my statements in this House yesterday on the general question of the freedom of speech and meeting in time of war. Any propaganda advocating resistance to the Military Service Acts, or intended to stop the supply of munitions is, of course, illegal, and proceedings have been taken in cases that have occurred.

Major HUNT

Is the right hon. Gentleman going to stop these people holding meetings in favour of a premature peace where there is likely to be a row about it, and I hope there will be?

Mr. SAMUEL

I would refer my hon. Friend to the full statement I made yesterday. It is not a matter that can be dealt with properly in answer to a question.
