HC Deb 22 May 1916 vol 82 c1810
44. Mr. HUGH LAW

asked why steamers sailing from Londonderry are prohibited from taking migratory labourers to Scotland; and whether, in view of the need for these men's labour in Great Britain and of the fact that their families depend largely upon their yearly earnings as migratory labourers, the prohibition will be withdrawn?

Mr. HERBERT SAMUEL

I am informed that by order of the military authorities passengers from Ireland may not embark on board any vessel except from six ports, of which Londonderry is not one. Migratory labourers, like other passengers, may embark at the approved ports on producing satisfactory credentials or proofs of identity and giving valid reasons for their intended journey. I will ask the military authorities to consider the representations contained in the second part of the hon. Member's question.
