HC Deb 09 May 1916 vol 82 cc456-7
24. Captain CLIVE

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he is aware that police constables of military age in the county of Middlesex and elsewhere are employed in trapping, among others, officers home on leave from the front for exceeding the speed limit; and if he will take steps to get this service discontinued during the War with a view to enabling these men to be released for military service?

Mr. BRACE

It is the urgent wish of the naval and military authorities that all officers shall observe the law with respect to the speed of motor cars, and this has been enjoined on officers by orders from the Army Council. The duty of the police is to ensure the general observance of the law, and their action in this matter is necessary.

Captain CLIVE

Could not this service be equally well rendered by men who are past military age?

Mr. BRACE

We are advised that it could not be done effectively.
