HC Deb 16 March 1916 vol 80 c2266
99. Mr. WATT

asked the Under-Secretary for War whether when soldiers who have done long spells of service in the trenches lose their mental balance or are suffering from severe nerve strain they are discharged from the Army and their pay thus stopped; and whether, seeing that in many instances the wives and children of these men are left in very poor circumtances, sometimes near starvation, an arrangement will be made by his Department to avoid such cases?

The FINANCIAL SECRETARY to the WAR OFFICE (Mr. Forster)

Where there is ground for hope that a permanent cure will be effected in a reasonable time the man is not discharged, but given light duty at home. When discharge is necessary from the causes mentioned a pension is awarded.
