HC Deb 16 March 1916 vol 80 cc2267-8
103. Mr. HUDSON

asked the Under-Secretary of State for War if he is aware that the soldiers billeted locally in Newcastle-upon-Tyne have been engaged at the Elswick Works unloading railway trucks and received only their Army pay; and whether that part of their wages for this civilian work for the Elswick firm is being handed to the Army authorities instead of being paid to the men?

Mr. FORSTER

Yes, Sir. Orders were given at the time for recovery to be made from the firm as for civilian wages.
