HC Deb 14 March 1916 vol 80 cc1896-7
84. Mr. WATT

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether Captain William Waddell was in the service of the Government as master of the steam ferry of the Nigerian Railways, British West Africa, for some years; whether his employment there led to a complete breakdown of his health; whether he has been unable to resume his duties on account of that breakdown; and whether the Department proposes to do anything to assist him financially, in view of the fact that he is much in need of help?

The SECRETARY of STATE for the COLONIES (Mr. Bonar Law)

Mr. Waddell held a temporary appointment under the Government of Nigeria, which he was compelled to relinquish owing to ill-health after receiving the maximum of leave allowable. His post was not pensionable, but the Government of Nigeria have been asked to consider whether a compassionate allowance can, in the circumstances, be granted.

Mr. WATT

Has the right hon. Gentleman made representations to the Nigerian Railway on the point?
