HC Deb 29 June 1916 vol 83 c1030
64. Mr. G. FABER

asked the Under-Secretary for War if he will give the names of the persons who recommended Trebitsch Lincoln for employment at the War Office after the outbreak of war; and whether it was on the faith of those recommendations that Trebitsch Lincoln was given employment there.

Mr. TENNANT

It is not possible to ascertain the names of the persons who recommended Lincoln, as the existing system under which references are fully recorded was not introduced till October, 1914, and the records of the first few weeks of the War, when the pressure was very great, have not been kept. My statement on 27th June was based upon the recollections of those who dealt with the matter at the time.

Mr. FABER

Cannot the right hon. Gentleman discover the names of those who gave references to a man of this kind?

Mr. TENNANT

I have not been able to do so.

Mr. HOGGE

Were not the War Office warned against this man?

Mr. TENNANT

I am not aware of it. Quite the reverse.
