HC Deb 29 June 1916 vol 83 c1028
54. Mr. PETO

asked the Prime Minister whether he will consider the advisability of moving to alter the Standing Orders of the House in order to allow of the suspension of the Sittings of the House for such period as may be necessary to allow Ministers to attend Cabinet Councils in cases of emergency during the continuance of the War, and in other cases where the Government consider it in the national interest to move the suspension of the sitting?

The PRIME MINISTER

I doubt if these emergencies occur sufficiently often to make it necessary to adopt this suggestion.

Mr. PETO

Can the right hon. Gentleman give us an assurance that he will not allow any Standing Orders of the House to interfere with the carrying on of public business by members of the Cabinet in cases of emergency if they occur more frequently?
