HC Deb 20 June 1916 vol 83 c17
29. Mr. GINNELL

asked the Prime Minister whether he is aware that General Maxwell held in his correspondence with the Bishop of Limerick that his plenary powers comprised power to dictate to bishops how they should treat priests, without producing either charge or evidence; whether he has read the bishop's letter, dated 17th May, to the general; whether he can now give the answer which the general has failed to give; and, if General Maxwell's view of his powers is correct, when and how it is proposed to enforce them on bishops and priests?

Major GUINNESS

Before the right hon. Gentleman answers, may I ask, Sir, whether it is in order for an hon. Member to get up in this House to ask a question, wearing the rebel Sinn Fein colours?

Mr. SPEAKER

I have nothing to do with the clothes hon. Members choose to wear.

The PRIME MINISTER

General Maxwell's communications with the bishops were perfectly proper and judicious, and I have nothing to add to them.
