HC Deb 01 June 1916 vol 82 cc2874-5
50. Mr. R. McNEILL

asked the Prime Minister whether, with a view to the prevention of vested interests being created which would interfere with the rebuilding of Sackville Street, Dublin, as part of an architectural and town-planning scheme worthy of the position and natural features of the thoroughfare, the Government will take immediate steps to acquire the whole area in order to be in a position to control the rebuilding?

The PRIME MINISTER (Mr. Asquith)

The Home Secretary is proceeding to Dublin to discuss this with other questions. I can make no statement until after his return.

Mr. McNEILL

Can the right hon. Gentleman not hold some hope that in the meantime nothing would be done to prejudice the object in view?

The PRIME MINISTER

That is most desirable, I think.

Mr. MacCALLUM SCOTT

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the worst of all architectural effects are produced in Government controlled schemes?

The PRIME MINISTER

That is a matter of opinion.
