HC Deb 31 July 1916 vol 84 cc2053-4
36. Mr. BYRNE

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he has received any resolutions from America requesting the release of the Irish women prisoners now detained at Lewes prison without trial?

Mr. WHITE

Before the right hon. Gentleman answers this question, will he say whether he has received any special request from the Government of the United States with regard to the Countess Markeviecz; whether he is aware that she is at present receiving religious instruction in the doctrines of the Catholic Church in Ireland; and whether, pending a statement——

Mr. SPEAKER

The hon. Member must give notice of that.

The SECRETARY of STATE for the HOME DEPARTMENT (Mr. Herbert Samuel)

The answer is in the negative.

Mr. BYRNE

Will the right hon. Gentleman give us some guarantee that the Countess Markeviecz will not be transferred from Dublin until——

Mr. SAMUEL

That does not arise out of this question which has reference to the ladies who are detained at Lewes. The hon. Member must let me have notice of any question relating to the Countess Markeviecz.

Mr. BYRNE

Can we have some guarantee that meantime she will not be removed?

Mr. SPEAKER

The hon. Member must give notice of that question.
