HC Deb 31 July 1916 vol 84 c2077

The following questions stood on the Notice Paper in the names of Mr. EUGENE WASON and Sir G. YOUNGER:

87 and 88. To ask the Secretary for Scotland whether his attention has been called to the ordinance of the Scottish University Courts at present lying upon the Table of this House; whether he is aware that there are great differences of opinion with regard to its terms and the propriety of proceeding with a matter of such importance at the present time; and whether, in view of the possibilities of the future, he will arrange to withdraw the ordinance until the changes which will be necessitated by the War are better realised.

Mr. E. WASON

In putting this question, may I, on behalf of the Scottish Members, congratulate the right hon. Gentleman on his appointment as Secretary for Scotland?

Mr. TENNANT

I am much obliged to my right hon. Friend. The question of withdrawing the ordinance is one for the consideration of the University bodies who have proposed it, but I have no doubt that the reasons adduced in the question will be duly taken into consideration by the Privy Council, when they come to deal with the question in virtue of their powers under Section 21 of the Universities (Scotland) Act, 1889.
