HC Deb 31 July 1916 vol 84 cc2076-7
86. Mr. BARNES

asked the Secretary for Scotland if he is aware of the fact that prison warders in Barlinnie prison are paid at the rate of 24s. per week and that, notwithstanding increased prices of food and living generally, they have had no increase or bonus; is he aware of the agitation on the matter in Glasgow; and will he take steps with a view to an increase of wages or a bonus during the time of high prices?

Mr. TENNANT

Twenty-four shillings per week is the minimum pay of a second-class warder, but my right hon. Friend must keep in view that in addition these warders have various allowances and advantages. The warder staff received an increase of pay which took effect on 1st October, 1913. As regards increases during the War, I would beg to refer my right hon. Friend to the statement made by the late Financial Secretary to the Treasury in reply to the hon. Member for Walsall on 29th June.
