HC Deb 20 July 1916 vol 84 cc1163-4
13. Mr. ANDERSON

asked the Home Secretary whether he is aware that practically the whole of the shops of the country kept open on Whit Monday, the shop workers foregoing their holiday without extra remuneration; and whether the Government will recommend that, in lieu of Whit Monday, Tuesday, 8th August, should be observed as a holiday in the distributive trade.

Mr. SAMUEL

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply which I gave to the hon. Member for West Carmarthenshire on Monday last.

Mr. ANDERSON

Seeing that these shop workers on the last occasion worked without any extra remuneration at all, cannot the Home Office recommend to employers on this occasion that, if they do work the extra day, they should at least be paid for it?

Mr. SAMUEL

I will consider that suggestion.

Mr. T. DAVIES

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that most of those working in shops had the extra holiday?
