HC Deb 20 July 1916 vol 84 cc1162-3
12. Mr. MEEHAN

asked the Home Secretary whether Major Price, who is acting as intelligence officer at Army headquarters, is still county inspector of Carlow and drawing the salary of that office; if he will state who is at present performing the duties of Major Price as county inspector, and what salary is such person receiving for such duties; what salary Major Price receives as county inspector and the total amount of all payments made to Major Price from military sources since his appointment as intelligence officer; and if Major Price since his appointment as county inspector of Car-low never performed any of the duties of that office while receiving full salary from the date of his appointment?

Mr. SAMUEL

Major Price's position continues to be as explained, in reply to the hon. Member's question of the 23rd March last. Pending Major Price's release from military duties the supervision of the county of Carlow has been entrusted to the county inspector of the adjoining county of Wicklow, who is in receipt of his ordinary rate of pay only. Major Price's annual pay as county inspector is at present £370, with the usual allowances for lodging and servant. From the date in August, 1914, on which he took up military duty to the end of last month he has drawn about £526 in subsistence allowance, this being a charge on military funds. The reply to the last part of the question is in the affirmative, as Major Price remains an officer of the constabulary, receiving no military pay.

Mr. MEEHAN

Has he ever performed any duties in the county for which he receives his salary?

Mr. SAMUEL

No, I understand he has not taken up his active appointment.
