HC Deb 20 July 1916 vol 84 c1191
81. Mr. WATT

asked the Lord Advocate whether he. is aware that a Committee on minor legal appointments in Scotland reported unanimously in 1911 that as vacancies occurred in the office of sheriff clerk the claims of sheriff clerk deputes should be favourably considered in filling up the same; whether this recommendation was adopted in the recent appointment of the sheriff clerk of Lanarkshire; and whether no suitable man was found among the sheriff clerk deputes to promote to the position?

The LORD ADVOCATE (Mr. Munro)

The answer to the first part of my hon. and learned Friend's question is in the affirmative, to the second in the negative. The claims of sheriff clerk deputes are always carefully considered in making appointments to the office of sheriff clerk, and this was done before the appointment referred to in the question was made.
