HC Deb 20 July 1916 vol 84 c1169
30. Mr. CULLINAN

asked why Mr. James Hogan, stationer, of Tipperary, was arrested by the police and detained in the military prison from the 5th to the 8th instant on a charge of having exhibited in his window picture postcards bearing photographs of Sinn Fein leaders, in view of the fact that exactly similar postcards have been permitted to be exhibited in stationers' windows in Dublin and other cities and towns throughout Ireland; and if he will explain why this trader has been subjected to exceptional treatment?

Mr. SAMUEL

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply which I gave to his similar question on the 18th instant.

Mr. CULLINAN

The right hon. Gentleman has not replied to my question. I ask him again if he will explain why this trader has been subjected to exceptional treatment while other people all over Ireland are allowed to display those postcards in their windows without any interference from the authorities; and whether this is a case of over-officiousness on the part of the military authorities?

Mr. SAMUEL

I do not know that this trader was subjected to exceptional treatment. The action was taken by the police on the order of the competent military authorities. I will communicate with them and ask for a further explanation, and then I will write to the hon. Member.

Mr. CULLINAN

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware of the fact that on the particular date upon which this man was arrested for displaying these postcards in his window similar postcards were being sold and displayed all over Ireland?
