HC Deb 18 July 1916 vol 84 c822
16. Mr. SNOWDEN

asked the Secretary of State for War if men who are attached to the Artisan Works Company, Royal Engineers, Clipstowe Camp, are being sent abroad as tunnellers; if these men joined on the understanding that they were to be employed at their respective trades at home; if the ages of the men who are to be sent abroad vary from forty-one to fifty-eight; will he explain why these men are being sent abroad; and will steps be taken at once to keep men of the ages stated on Home service?

Mr. FORSTER

So far as can be traced no men enlisted for the Artisan Works Company, Royal Engineers, have been, or are being, sent overseas as tunnellers. It has been ascertained from Clipstowe Camp that the men for the Artisan Companies were enlisted for general service. The age limits were fortyone to fifty.
