HC Deb 05 July 1916 vol 83 cc1520-1
47. Mr. PETO

asked the Prime Minister whether the Rev. Dr. John Clifford, of Westbourne Park Baptist Chapel, is in receipt of a pension of £200 a year from the Civil List; if so, for what services to the State was this pension granted; whether he is aware that Dr. John Clifford has recently been taking an active part in anti-recruiting and Stop-the-War propaganda, having been present and addressed a Stop-the-War conference at Devonshire House from which the Press representatives were excluded, and that his speech was afterwards reported in the "Labour Leader"; and, under these circumstances, will he consider the advisability of stopping any further expenditure of public money in the support of Dr. Clifford?

The PRIME MINISTER

The answer to the first part of the question is in the negative.
