HC Deb 05 July 1916 vol 83 c1520
45. Sir RICHARD COOPER

asked the Prime Minister if, in view of the public anxiety over the circumstances surrounding the loss of His Majesty's ship "Hampshire," he will fix an early day for discussion of the Motion standing in the name of the hon. Member for Maidstone or that of the hon. Member for Walsall?

The PRIME MINISTER

As the hon. Baronet is aware, a formal Court of Inquiry has already been held by the naval authorities into all the circumstances attending the loss of His Majesty's ship "Hampshire," and the conclusion has been repeatedly stated to the House. It is not proposed to hold any further inquiry.

Sir R. COOPER

I beg to give notice-that I will raise this matter on the Adjournment of the House to-morrow evening.

Mr. G. FABER

Did all the witnesses who were examined at the inquiry take the same view of the cause of the disaster?

The PRIME MINISTER

I cannot say.

Mr. HOGGE

How many more names does the right hon. Gentleman want to the Motion on the Order Paper before he will give a day?

The PRIME MINISTER

I have given my answer.

Commander BELLAIRS

Could not the right hon. Gentleman reconsider the question and keep an open mind until after the discussion has taken place in the other place to-morrow?

The PRIME MINISTER

I did not know there was such a discussion.
