HC Deb 10 January 1916 vol 77 c1275
27. Major GLAZEBROOK

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he can give a rough estimate of the revenue that would be obtained by a tax of 2d. in the 1s on the admission to all places of entertainment, indoor or outdoor, such 2d. to be collected by making it obligatory on the management to affix a postage-stamp of the requisite value to the admission ticket, and charging it to the purchaser of the ticket; and whether he has considered the desirability of introducing this form of taxation?

Mr. MONTAGU

My right hon. Friend fears that he cannot undertake to give estimates of the yield of possible taxation apart from actual fiscal proposals submitted to the House by the Government. As regards the last part of the question, all relevant suggestions will receive very careful attention if and when it should become necessary to consider the imposition of fresh taxation.

Sir J. D. REES

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that in Petrograd for many years the total expense of the hospitals has been borne by a tax of this kind?

Mr. MONTAGU

I was not aware.
