HC Deb 10 January 1916 vol 77 c1269
23. Mr. HOGGE

asked the President of the Local Government Board whether the £160,000 gift from the Canadian Government allocated to the East Coast was ear-marked by them for that purpose; and whether it was confined to the East Coast of England?

Mr. LONG

The gift was not earmarked in any way by the Canadian Government. Its allocation was left to, and effected by, the Government Committee on the Prevention and Relief of Distress. The general lines of the scheme proposed by the Committee were approved by the Canadian authorities. It was confined to the East Coast of England on account of the exceptional conditions of the particular places in that area.
